With the British pound is on a seven year high against the Euro which could remain for the next few months and is excellent news for boat buyers. Before New Years, when we got the boat on land, we couldn’t wait to get the boat back in the water again. The other cruisers on the yard had been there for several months, but to us it seemed completely unlikely that we would stay on the yard longer than what was absolutely necessary. Now we’ve been here for so long, though, that we’re starting to feel at home, and we could easily stay here for the rest of the season just fixing the boat!

Like last week, it was our plan this week to do an overnight sail in the Atlantic in order to move south more quickly, but once again we continued in the ICW. Last week, too much wind was holding us back, and this week, there was too little wind!

Traditionally, boating and boat ownership have been viewed as lifestyle choices which, to a certain extent, resist the ups and downs of economic flux. The desire and passion to get afloat and enjoy all that sailing has to offer results in many people owning boats despite, rather than because of, the financial consequences of so doing. Whilst those considerations still apply to areas of the second-hand, brokerage boat market, the long tail of the recent recessions in the UK and mainland Europe and the general global downturn, has had a real impact upon the marketplace, which has continued during 2014.
The Route Du Rhum is a single handed ocean race, from St Malo to Guadeloupe; some 3,500 miles along the famous Rhum line. It's a physical and mental sailing challenge - one of the most admired in yacht racing - where skippers need to look after their boats through rough weather, to avoid breakages which can end their race, or reduce speed, whilst still pushing the boats to their absolute limits! There is little opportunity for sleep in these fast and furious sailing conditions, and almost anything can and does happen. This year, out of the 90 boats that started the race, 26 retired with varying problems, such as keels falling off, leaks, damage, collisions and technical problems. Just completing the race is a real achievement!

With strong wind conditions last night, now the front has passed through, winds have dropped, but still peaking at 40 knots, big confused seas. No Skippers were injured they are all safe. Read on for round up of the nights racing. Several skippers announced their retirement due to damage.
When Henrik tells about our trip, he usually says that he likes to sail and I like to go places. I find the places, I would like to go to, Henrik gets us there, and I figure out what to see, when we are there. Sometimes Henrik objects a little to the things I want to do and see, but my enthusiasm isn't too big either, when we sailing against the wind or sailing overnight.

Launching the products at the PSP Southampton Boat Show, Neil Chapman commented “We have previously done some aerial photography of boats but helicopters and light aircraft make the costs prohibitive. By utilising drones, we hope we are able to bring this service to many people selling their boats with Boatshed”.

Together with the Marine Inspection Association of leading marine surveyors, Boatshed has introduced the use of IPAs when selling sail and motor boats. Boats we sell are physically inspected, assessed and reported upon by an experienced, independent, marine surveyor before they are listed. Up to 55 critical areas of a second-hand boat are assessed.
